The very scarce first edition of English obstetrician, geologist and palaeontologist Gideon Algernon Mantell's charming account of a walk through his hometown of Lewes, Sussex. With chapters dedicated to the early history of the region, its churches, geological phenomena and guides to its most picturesque walks.

A presentation copy, with a personalised inscription from Mantell to the verso of the dedication page: 'Miss Grantham, with the affectionate regards of her fathers old friend, G Mantell', and dated August 1847.

Illustrated with a frontispiece view of Lewes priory, and a small number of vignette illustrations. 

With the Grantham family armorial bookplate to the front pastedown, and a single page advertisement for further works from Mantell to the rear of the work.

Pages 97 to 112 are absent, with pages 49 to 64 supplied in duplicate between pages 96 and 113.

Condition

In the publisher's original cloth binding. Bumping to back strip head and tail, with minor losses to the cloth in these regions. Small mark to head of front board. Bookplate to front pastedown. Internally, firmly bound. Spotting to frontispiece. Author's inscription to verso of dedication page. Pages bright, with the odd spot. Pages 97 to 112 are absent, with pages 49 to 64 supplied in duplicate between pages 96 and 113.
