An Important Work, Author's Presentation Copy, Leather Binding, Very Scarce

A very scarce work. Author's presentation copy, given to an L. Sulivan, with an ink inscription to the recto to the front free endpaper. This work is a collection of seven pamphlets discussing the Royal Navy and its operations in the mid nineteenth century. Including; 'Remarks on the Conduct of the Naval Administration of Great Britain Since 1815', published in 1847. 'Short Remarks on the Present State of the Navy', published in 1846. 'Suggestions for more Speedy Equipment and Better Manning Her Majesty's Navy', published in 1840. 'Suggestions for the Speedy and Secure Conveyance of Our Reinforcements to Canada', in 1826. 'Thoughts on the National Defences', published in 1852. 'An Essay on Naval Operations' published in 1849. 'Remarks on the Bill Presented to Parliament, and Read a First Time, for Improving the Condition of masters, Mates, and Seamen, in the Merchant Service', published in 1849. All works, besides 'Remarks on the Conduct of the Naval Administration of Great Britain Since 1815', were written by William Bowles. 'Remarks on the Conduct of the Naval Administration of Great Britain Since 1815' is written by anonymously a 'Flag Officer' with a preface by Bowles. Copac states the author as Charles Penrose. Penrose was a Royal Navy officer who was the Commander-in-Chief of the Mediterranean Fleet. Bowles was a senior Royal Navy officer and a politician for the Conservative Party. He was a junior officer during the French Revolutionary Wars, and a commanding officer during the Napoleonic Wars.

Condition

Rebacked with the original half calf boards and spine laid on, with cloth to the boards. Externally, generally smart. Light rubbing to the spine and boards. A little marking to the boards. Ink inscription to the recto to the front free endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright with the odd scattered spot.
