Description

Leather Binding, Signed Binding

First Edition Thus, being the first Howes translation published by William Pickering.

Bound in a half-crushed morocco binding on marbled boards by Henry Young & Sons.

This is the popular translation of Horace's epodes, satires, and epistles by Francis Howes. Contents include 'Epodes', 'The Secular Ode', 'The Satires', 'The Epistles', and 'The Notes'.

This translation was originally privately printed in 1841, and was printed for the public by Howes' son following his death in 1845. It was praised for the heroic couplets that Francis Howes was known for, and described as being 'very good, unforced, idiomatic, and felicitous'.

Francis Howes (1776-1844) was a classical scholar and translator, who made many translations from Latin into English, some of which he printed privately for himself. Works include 'Miscellaneous Poetical Translations', 'The Satires of A. Persius Flaccus', and 'The First Book of Horace's Satires'.

Quintus Horatius Flaccus (65-8 BC) was the leading Roman lyric poet during the Octavian period. Horace was alive to witness Rome's transformation from a republic to an empire, and even became a spokesman for the new regime.

With an illustrated bookplate belonging to Robert Gladstone to front paste down, who could possibly be the English merchant, politician, and brother of William Gladstone, the prime minister of the United Kingdom.
