Illustrated, Leather Binding

Published in parts between 1842 and 1847, this is the two volume 1844 edition of this work. With both volumes bound in one, with a title page to volume I only. With volumes I serially paginated, and volume II with continuous pagination.

Edited by Anglican cleric George Ayliffe Poole, a writer on religion, church architecture and history. He strongly advocated the Gothic Revival.

Illustrated with forty-eight engraved lithographic plates. Collated, complete.

Published in parts, Boyne's bibliography notes that 'copies of this book are often imperfect', and pagination can vary.

With the armorial bookplate of Harcourt Skrine to the front pastedown.

A lovely study of the architecture of Yorkshire churches, with churches including Adel, Bolton Percy, Methley and Skelton discusses, alongside numerous others.

Condition

In a half morocco binding, with marbled paper covered boards, and gilt detailing to back strip. Rubbing to joints, with minor losses to the leather. Hinges starting, with boards holding firm. Armorial bookplate to front pastedown. Internally, firmly bound. Spotting and light handling marks throughout, concentrated to plates.
