Publishers' Original Binding, Scarce

Scarce. Bound in the publisher's original cloth binding. Illustrated with one folding plate and one folding map to the frontispiece. Written by Samuel Wilberforce, a Church of England Bishop, chaplain to Prince Albert, and was noted as an popular public speaker of the period. Wilberforce is best remembered for being vocally against Darwin's theory of evolution, engaging in a debate with him in 1860. The Protestant Episcopal Church is a branch of Anglicanism located in the United States. Dating from the colonial era, this work offers an insight into the history of this church and its prevalence in America. Previous owner's bookplate to the front pastedown, with the phrase 'Sans Changer'.

Condition

In the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally generally smart, with light bumping to the head and tail of the spine and also to the extremities. Small cracks to the front and rear joints, both to the head and tail, with the backstrip starting to lift toward the head of the front joint. The odd spot to the fore edge. Bookplate to the front pastedown, which is lightly spotted. Internally firmly bound. Page are generally bright and clean with scattered spots. Creases to the folding plate to the front of the volume, with light chips to the extremities, and several lighter creases to the folding map.
