Description

Illustrated, Publishers' Original Binding, Scarce

Founded in the early 1840s, the Sydenham Society published some twenty-nine titles across forty volumes until the late 1850s. Named for the important seventeenth century physician Thomas Sydenham known as the English Hippocrates, their mission was one of antiquarian interest, aiming to publish medical writings and history works.

Consisting of nineteen volumes, making this a scarce set of the Sydenham Society's titles.

Volume I, 'Observations on Aneurism', was published in 1844 and written by John E. Erichsen.

Volumes II and III, 'Animal Chemistry, with reference to the Physiology and Pathology of Man' were published between 1845 and 1846, and written by Dr. J. Franz Simon. Volume I is illustrated with one plate, volume II with two.

Volume IV, 'An Anatomical Description of the Diseases of Circulation and Respiration', was published in 1846 and written by Charles Eward Hasse.

Volume V, 'On the Injuries and Diseases of Bones', was published in 1847 and written by Baron Dupytren.

Volume VI, 'The Works of William Harvey, M. D., with a Life of the Author by Robert Willis', was published in 1847 and is an important and well-known edition of Harvey's works.

Volumes VI, VIII, IX and X, 'A Manual of Pathological Anatomy' were published between 1849 and 1852 and written by Carl Rokitansky. Complete in four volumes, with the first volume in the original publisher's cloth and the other three volumes rebacked with the original boards preserved. Volume VI is illustrated with two plates.

Volumes XI and XII, 'The Genuine Works of Hippocrates' were published in 1849 and translated with annotations by Francis Adams. Complete in two volumes, volume XI is illustrated with three plates and volume XII with five.

Volume XIII, 'Annals of Influenza or Epidemic Catarrhall Fever in Great Britain from 1510 to 1837', was published in 1852 and written by Theophilus Thompson.

Volume XIV, 'A Manual of the Nervous Diseases of Man', was published in 1853 and written by Moritz Heinrich Romberg. The work is incomplete, lacking the second volume.

Volume XV, 'Rudiments of Pathological Histology', was published in 1855 and written by Carl Wedl. It contains one hundred and seventy-two illustrations on wood throughout the text, as well as two tissue leaves with subscribers to the rear.

Volume XVI, 'Medical Logic', was published in 1855 and written by F. Oesterlan.

Volume XVII, 'A Treatise on the Diseases of the Breast and Mammary Region' was published in 1856 and written by A. Velpeau.

Volumes XVIII and XIX, 'On Animal and Vegetable Parasites of the Human Body' was published in 1857 and written by Dr. Frederich Kuchenmeister. Volume XVIII is illustrated with eight plates, including two in colour. Volume XIX is illustrated with six plates, including one in colour; sadly lacking one plate.

A remarkable and scarce set of these important editions by the Sydenham Society, comprising all manner of varied medical works.
