Leather Binding

With the bookplate of one James Campbell to the front pastedown of all volumes, featuring an illustrated cat. Some of the essays included across these volumes are, 'Milton', 'Machiavelli', 'Horace Walpole', 'Lord Bacon', 'Lord Hollan' and 'Leigh Hunt'. Thomas Babington Macaulay was a British Historian and Whig Politician. His books on British history have been hailed as masterpieces and he extensively wrote as an essayist and reviewer. One of his most prominent essays is his essay on Milton which was originally published in 1825 for the Edinburgh Review. Across these volumes it is the first essay to volume I.

Condition

In full calf bindings with gilt stamping to the spines. Externally, sound with slight rubbing to the joints, boards and spines. Loss to the tail of the spine to volume I and heavy rubbing to the head and tail of spines to all volumes. Small loss to the spine labels of all volumes and some minor bumping to the extremities. Front hinge to volume I has failed after front endpaper, with the backstrip lifting. Front hinges to volumes II and III are slightly strained but firm. Internally, all volumes are firmly bound. Pages are slightly age toned to edges with the odd spot throughout. Prior owner's inscription to the recto of front endpaper to all volumes, dated 1907. Bookplate to the front pastedown of all volumes, 'Ex Libris James Campbell'.
