First Edition, Leather Binding, Rebound, Very Scarce
Complete in three volumes. The first edition of this work. A very scarce work. A historical fiction novel, set during the reign of Queen Mary, being a historical romance. The author had a rather negative view of Mary, whilst still being incredibly fascinated by her reign. Mary Tudor was the first daughter of Henry VIII, born from his first wife, Catherine of Aragon. Her reign is best remembered how for the religious dissenters that she had burned at the stake during the Marian persecutions. It is estimated that she had over two-hundred and eighty people burnt at the stake. She re-established the Roman Catholic church in England after her father brought in the Church of England. The novel, whilst being a romance, has the morbid backdrop of Mary's religious persecutions. Written by Alfred Butler. Institutional stamp to the title pages.
