The first and only edition of this work. A very scarce copy, rarely seen in commerce and only found institutionally in nine libraries including the British Library and the library of the University of Birmingham among others. 

John Pendleton Kennedy (October 25, 1795 August 18, 1870) was an American novelist and Whig politician who served as United States Secretary of the Navy from July 26, 1852 to March 4, 1853, during the administration of President Millard Fillmore, and as a U.S. Representative from the Maryland's 4th congressional district

He was known as one of the leaders during the efforts to end slavery in 1847 and advocate for religious tolerance.

Condition

Unbound. Loss to upper margin front leaf. Red mark to front, inscribed '1842' in crayon. Text block firm. Spotting scattered throughout, particularly to first and last few leaves.
