The first English edition of this work. The first volume only, the second English volume was published in 1846. A fascinating discussion on the history of painting, tracing the history of the reign of Constantine the Great, to the mid nineteenth century. This volume looks in particular at the Italian schools of painting. Illustrated with a folding plate. Written by Franz Theodor Kugler, a noted art history, who was well known for his works discussing at history, as well as for his biography of Frederick the Great. Edited with notes by C. L. Eastlake, an English painter and gallery director.

Condition

In a full vellum binding. Externally, generally smart, with some discolouration to the boards, as is usual with vellum. A few light marks to the boards and spine, with a heavier mark to the head of the rear board. Small amount of rubbing to the spine. Very small amount of loss to the spine label. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and generally clean with the odd spot to the first and last few pages, and to the folding plate. Prior owner's pencil annotations to the rear endpaper, and to the reverse of the folding plate.
