Description

Illustrated, Leather Binding

In French. A French translation of Laurence Sterne's novel 'A Sentimental Journey', translated by Jules Janin. This novel follows Reverend Mr Yorick on his adventures, usually amorous, through France and Italy. The novel was very popular upon its publication, and helped to establish travel writing as a dominant genre. Illustrated with a frontispiece, and eleven plates. Laurence Sterne was a novelist and clergyman, best known for his 'The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy', and 'A Sentimental Journey Through France and Italy'. Sterne discovered his talent and love for writing late in his life, after writing 'A Political Romance' in support of his dean in a church squabble. After this, he dedicated himself to writing, beginning 'Tristram Shandy' and publishing in 1759. It was successful upon its publication, and he received a lot of praise and admiration for his work. Jules Janin was a journalist and critic, publishing novels such as 'La Confession', 'Barnave', and 'L'Ane Mort et la Femme Guillotinee'. Illustrated by Tony Johannot. Johannot was a French engraver and painter. Undated, dated by a copy on Copac held at the Cambridge University.
