This is a very scarce edition, these modernisations being unique.

A selection of Chaucer's poems, modernised here by William Wordsworth, Leigh Hunt, Elizabeth Barrett Browning, and more.

Wordsworth modernised 'The Cuckoo and the Nightingale' and 'Extract From Troilus and Cressida'. Barrett Browning modernised 'Queen Annelida and False Arcite'. Leigh Hunt modernised 'The Manicple's Tale', 'The Friar's Tale', and 'The Squire's Tale'.

Edited by Richard Horne.

Prior owner's ink inscription to the verso to the front endpaper, 'W. Smyth'.

Condition

In the original publisher's cloth binding. Externally, smart, with just a few minor marks to the boards and spine. Minor bumping to the head and tail of the spine and to the extremities. Bookseller's labels to the pastedowns. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean with just a few odd spots. The occasional pencil line to the text.
