What Our Customers Say...
Description
First Edition, Publishers' Original Binding, Uncommon
The uncommon first edition of this work.
Kinnear was a member of the well-known family of Scottish bankers and merchants, and in 1839 met David Roberts in Egypt and travelled with him to Mt. Sinai and Petra.
This work consists of twelve letters written by John Kinnear about that journey, and of his subsequent travels in Syria.
He offers a positive view of Egypt under the governance of Mehemet Ali, praising his religious tolerance to both Jews and Christians.
Rebacked, in the publisher's original cloth binding, retaining the original half title and endpapers. Without the often absent errata leaf.
A work viewed as valuable for the insight he provides into contemporary feelings in the West towards the government and culture of the Near East.
