The scarce first edition of this work.

The work of Scottish naval officer, surveyor, cartographer and explorer John Wood, best known for his exploration of central Asia.

In this volume, Wood provides an account of the 1838 expedition he led that found one of the River Oxus's sources in central Asia. He was the first European to do so.

The Royal Geographical Society recognised his work by awarding him their Patron's Medal in 1841.

Illustrated with a folding map.

Condition

In a half morocco binding, with cloth covered boards. Significant rubbing to back strip head and tail, joints, and board perimeters. Tail of rear joint, and head and tail of front joint starting, with boards a touch tender. Evidence of bookplate removal to front pastedown. Internally, firmly bound. Pages lightly age toned. Significant handling marks and a small stain to the title page, with further light handling marks throughout.
