Illustrated, Uncommon

In the publisher's original cloth binding, with a decorative gilt spine. All edges gilt. 2 colour plates, 1 colour vignette and numerous illustrations in the text. Lacking the frontispiece and 14 other colour plates. There are chapters on heathers, geraniums, camellias, bulbs, succulents, the conservatory, orangery, tropical plants, the orchid house and aquarium, with detailed lists of plant varieties for each type of greenhouse. Charles M'Intosh (1794-1864) was a horticulturist descended from a line of gardeners: his grandfather, great-grandfather, and great-great-grandfather had been gardeners to the dukes of Atholl, while his father was the gardener, forester, and manager of improvements on the Abercairney estate for nearly fifty years.

Condition

In the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally sound, with wear to the extremities and to the head and tail of the spine. Small losses to the head and tail of the spine. Front joint is splitting and front hinge is starting, but still reasonably firm. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean but with the occasional spot and handling mark. Pages 109 to 112 and 129 to 136, have been partially cut but are still intact and attached.
