Description
First Edition, Illustrated, Leather Binding, Original Binding
The first edition of this work, with engraved title page to each volume. With 67 plates to volume I, including hand coloured map, and 52 plates to volume II. Collated, complete.
This work is composed of the steel engravings of English artist Henry Bartlett, drawn from his first visit to America in 1835. These engravings are supplemented by the text of Nathaniel Parker Willis, an American author, poet and editor who worked with several notable American writers including Edgar Allan Poe and Henry Wadsworth Longfellow.
Bartlett's plates were originally published in monthly instalments between 1837 and 1839, with bound editions of the work featuring the text of Willis published from 1840 onwards. This is the first of such editions.
Plates and descriptions include locations such as Niagara Falls, Yale College, the valley of Wyoming, and numerous others.
Identified as first edition from Abbey, 651. With engraved portrait frontispiece of Bartlett to volume I, as called for.
