Collated; illustrated with one-hundred and nine plates. Lacking plates XX and CXI.

The first edition of architect Samuel H. Brooks' impressive collection of plans for houses and villas. Termed 'one of the earliest full-fledged Victorian house pattern books'.

Brooks provides the specifications for thirty-six cottages and villas, eight summer houses, three lodges, and several gates, in a wide variety of styles including Gothic, Old English, Tudor, Elizabethan, Italian, Ionic, Greek, and Swiss. Designs are frequently accompanied by interior views. 

Bound without the publisher's advertisements.

From the library of Doctor Malcolm Higgs, an important architectural historian who worked as an assistant architect to Stirling & Gowan, working on their particularly renowned Leicester University Engineering Laboratory. During his long career he taught at the University of Edinburgh School of Architecture, Canterbury School of Architecture, and University of Nottingham. Later in his life he was the Vice-President and Honorary Librarian of the Royal Institute of British Architects, and contributed and edited the ‘Journal of Architecture’.

Condition

Rebound in quarter calf, with paper covered boards, and endpapers renewed. Externally, boards bright, but with fading and water staining to spine. Internally, firmly bound. Pages lightly age toned, with handling marks throughout. Significant tide marks to plates, with each plate hand numbered in pencil to the head. Final plate torn, and lacking one third.
