The scarce first edition of this charming collection of illustrated plates depicting the walled cathedral city of Chester. The work of British painter, writer, lithographer and art teacher John Skinner Prout.
With an engraved title page, frontispiece, and nineteen further tinted lithograph plates. Collated, complete.
Scenes depicted in the illustrations include, The Ladye Chapel, The Cloisters, The Falcon Inn, The Old Palace at Watergate and the entrance to the water tower on the Walls, alongside a number of views of the Cathedral.
With the armorial bookplate of Reverend George Becher Blomfield to the front pastedown.
Condition
In the publisher's original quarter morocco binding, with cloth covered boards. Bumping to back strip head. Rubbing to front and rear joints, with losses to leather in these regions, and boards holding firm. Five marks to rear board. Armorial bookplate to front pastedown. Internally, firmly bound. Areas of spotting and light foxing to plate perimeters, not affecting plates.
