What Our Customers Say...

Description

First Edition, Illustrated, Leather Binding

The first edition of this work. Illustrated throughout, with numerous vignettes demonstrating woodcut examples. Lacking 3 plates, the ‘Descent from the cross … when finished’ facing p. 710, the colour printed ‘Facsimile of a pattern’ and double page map of Jerusalem, both after p. 714, and the errata leaf. John Jackson's name is to the title page as the author of this work. He was largely responsible for the wood engravings. Later editions of this work credit William Andrew Chatto for writing much of the text. William Andrew Chatto was a writer who was the editor of many magazines including the 'New Sporting Magazine'. John Jackson was Thomas Bewick's apprentice. Following his time as an apprentice of Bewick, Jackson moved to London and worked for William Harvey. Prior owner's inscription to the recto of front blank, Thomas Constable 1843. With the bookplate of art historian and collector Patricia Milne Henderson. Milne Henderson was married to the former Director of the Fitzwilliam Museum, Michael Jaffe. They lived together in the country house Clifton Maybank, near Yeovil. A fascinating insight into this important art form.
