1839 The History of the Rebellion and Civil Wars in England
What Our Customers Say...
Description
Original Binding
Complete in seven volumes. This is a New Edition, printed from Clarendon's original manuscript which therefore contains previously suppressed passages from the first edition. Clarendon wrote this work during his exile and is his chiefly remembered work. It was the first full-scale detailed history of the Civil war as it was written by one of the key players of events. It was originally written between 1646 and 1648 and only recorded events until 1644. Following his banishment he wrote his Life before revising the history and incorporating it into the work. The work has been written from a royalist perspective and therefore the work subtly advances his own viewpoint and strategy. It is influenced by Clarendon's own politics and was first published as part of the publishing war between the Roundhead and Cavaliers.
