W. H. Maxwell's popular account of Victorian military and political figure, Arthur Wellesley, the First Duke of Wellington, famed for his superior defensive tactics in the Napoleonic wars. Starting with the birth, lineage and education of the Duke, Maxwell covers all of his expeditions and battles, until the end of his military career. Maxwell claimed to have served at the Peninsular campaign and the Battle of Waterloo himself, but this is generally believed to be untrue. As well as this biography, the Irish author also wrote military novels.
