What Our Customers Say...

Description

Folding Maps, Leather Binding

First published in six volumes between 1776 and 1789, this work traces Western civilisation from the Roman Empire to the fall of Byzantium, from 98AD to 1590. It was renowned for the use of irony in its well-smoothed prose, Gibbon's use of primary sources in compiling the history and its polemic criticism of religion.

It has run numerous editions and reprints, with the first volume running to six editions within fifteen years of its initial publication.

Written by Edward Gibbon (1737-1794), an English historian and MP. This was his most acclaimed and important work; his other writings mostly constituted autobiographical writing and letters.

Containing the ownership bookplate of Vereker Monteith Hamilton (1856-1931), an artist known for his military and historical works. His work centred on contemporary battles and events, such as the Tirah campaigns and Piper Findlater and Dargai.

Volumes I,  II and V are illustrated with a folding map. Collated, complete.

Bound by J. Clarke.
