Illustrated with an engraved title page.
'The Adventures of Caleb Williams' is William Godwin's call to end the abuse of power by the government, told through the life of the humbly born Caleb Williams.
This edition includes Godwin's original preface, which had been removed from the first edition as it caused alarm to booksellers.
William Godwin was an influential philosopher and journalist, known for his radical publications, and for being the father of Mary Shelley.
Condition
In the original publisher's cloth binding. Externally, generally smart. Light bumping to the head and tail of the spine and to the extremities, with a small amount of loss to the tail of the spine and to the rear joint. A few minor marks to the boards. Front hinge is starting but firm. Prior owner's ink inscription to the recto of the front endpaper. Tide mark to the rear paste down and rear endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are lightly age-toned and generally clean with the occasional spot, mostly to the first and last few pages.
