1838 Jorrock's Jaunts and Jollities
What Our Customers Say...
Description
First Edition, Illustrated, Leather Binding
First editon thus (the papers were originally published in the New Sporting Magazine). Jorrocks, the sporting cockney grocer, with his vulgarity and good-natured artfulness, was a great success with the public, and Surtees produced more Jorrocks novels in the same vein, notably Handley Cross and Hillingdon Hall, where the description of the house is very reminiscent of Hamsterley. In a Riviere binding (binder's stamp to front pastedown). Illustrated throughout with twelve plates by Hablot Knight Browne, a.k.a. Phiz (collated complete). Bookplate of E. Hulton to front pastedown.
Condition
In a full morocco binding with gilt detailing. Externally smart, though with joints cracked, and some light rubbing to the spine. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and generally clean, though with some small tidemarks to the corners of some centre pages.
