A new edition of this work, which was first conceived when James was imprisoned in America during the War of 1812. It was initially published between 1822 and 1824. James wished to compile an 'exact account of every operation of naval war during the period'. He consulted not only published works, but also the logs of the ships, and official narratives of those who were there. Due to the accuracy of this history, it was regarded by the Navy Records Society as an important source.

James looks at specific battles, colonial expeditions, British fleets in the channel, Lord Nelson's career and much more in this comprehensive study, starting from 1488.

This edition with additions on the Burmese War by Captain Chamier.
