What Our Customers Say...

Description

Illustrated, Original Binding, Publishers' Original Binding, Scarce

Scarce edition. First published in 1796. With six folding plates including the frontispiece. Title page states seven plates, but the work is vanishingly scarce so collation unavailable. The work is presented in the publisher's cloth, with no evidence of plate removal. Following the corruption and downfall of the monk Ambrosio, this work is a prime example of the male Gothic. Often imitated and adapted for the stage and screen, the convoluted and scandalous plot has made this one of the most important Gothic horror novel of its time. Written by Matthew Gregory Lewis, an English novelist and dramatist who specialized in Gothic Horror. He was also known for his work as a diplomat, politician and estate owner in Jamaica.

Condition

In the original green cloth binding. Externally, very smart with light shelf wear to the extremities. Minor rubbing to the spine. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean with light age toning to the extremities.
