Description
Early Edition, Folding Maps, Publishers' Original Binding
A fascinating and detailed reference and topographical work of the state of Illinois in 1837. Illinois is a state located in the midwest of the United States of America, and is located just on the southwest of Lake Michigan (one of the Great Lakes). It is known for its farmland, forests, rolling hills, and wetlands, as well as being home to one of the largest cities in the United States, Chicago.
This guide includes information on the topography, prairies, rivers, minerals, animals, agricultural products, as well as suggestions to immigrants and sketches of the counties and cities, as they apply to the mid nineteenth century. Also including a letter on the cultivation of prairies by The Hon. H.L. Ellsworth, and letters from 'a rambler in the west'.
The first edition, second issue of this work, with 'animals' spelled correctly to the title page.
Illustrated with a large folding map, upon which the state of Illinois has a hand-coloured outline in yellow.
Condition
In the publisher's original quarter cloth binding with paper covered boards. Externally, shelf wear and tidemarks to the boards, with significant bumping to the head and tail of the spine and extremities. Splitting to the cloth at the joints and spine, resulting in the boards being held by cords only. Cloth is lifting to the head of the spine, and may detach with further handling. Internally, hinges are starting. Binding is strained, and front free-endpaper is lifting at the head. Offsetting and spotting to the folding map and significant scattered spotting to the pages.
