Quintus Horatius Flaccus, or Horace as he is more widely known, was the leading Roman lyric poet and satirist under the emperor Augustus. Horace wrote poetry ranging from 'iambi' (epodes) and 'sermones' (satires and epistles) to 'carmina' (lyrics), yet the most frequent themes explored within his works were that of love, friendship, philosophy, and the art of poetry. This text is a fascinating work that presents the books of Horace in a chronological order 'according to the scheme of Dr Bentley', the English classical scholar, critic, and theologian who was the first Englishman to be ranked with the great heroes of classical learning.
