Leather Binding

To the first volume Johnson discusses the history of the English language in great detail. 'A Dictionary of the English Language' took Johnson nine years to write, and is one of the most influential dictionaries in the history of the English language. It was first published in 1755 and was viewed as the pre-eminent English dictionary before the Oxford English Dictionary's completion 173 years later. Johnson reached great fame from his dictionary as the general public appreciated that Johnson and Johnson alone wrote this large dictionary. With a portrait frontispiece of Johnson to volume I. Collated, complete. A bright nineteenth century edition of Johnson's famous dictionary.

Condition

In a half calf binding with cloth covered boards. Externally, sound with rubbed spines. Front joint to the second volume is split at the head, with the hinge firm. Leather is lifting to the corners of the rear board to volume I. Internally, both volumes are firmly bound. Closed tears to the fore edge of the endpapers to the second volume. Pages are bright with occasional light spots.
