The 1837 first edition volume one from a three volume set, alongside the 1841 second series volume one from a three volume set. Both are bound in the publisher's original pictorial cloth, by Remnant & Edmonds. The first edition volume is illustrated with a frontispiece, seven full-page monochrome illustrations, one colour plate, numerous vignette illustrations and a folding plate to the rear of the book. Collated complete. The second series volume is illustrated throughout with vignette engravings. A fascinating historical work on the customs and daily life of the ancient egyptians, with reference to their private lives, government, laws, arts, religion and more. Written by John Gardner Wilkinson, the English traveller, writer and Egyptologist, widely regarded as "the Father of British Egyptology".

Condition

In the original, full cloth binding. Externally, smart with some shelf wear to the edges. Bumping and chipping to the spines, with some loss to the upper spine of the first edition. Light marks to the boards, with a slightly darker mark to the rear board of the second edition. Handling marks to the paste-downs and free endpapers of the first edition. Offsetting to the rear paste-down and free endpaper of the second edition, with marks to the rear paste-down. Light shelving stamp to the front free endpapers. Internally, binding strained but still firm. Pages lightly age-toned but otherwise bright and clean. Spotting to the blanks, and some offsetting to the title page of the first edition. Light spotting to the folding plate in the first edition. The odd spot throughout. Offsetting to pages 166 and 167 of the second edition.
