Description

First Edition, Rebound

The first edition of George Tucker's two volume biography of Thomas Jefferson. This was the first major biography of Jefferson to be produced, published simultaneously in London and Philadelphia. This is the first British edition, with frontispiece portrait of Jefferson to volume I.

Diplomat, lawyer, Founding Father and third president of the United States, Thomas Jefferson was the principal author of the Declaration of Independence, and integral to the formation of his country. This was the first comprehensive study of his life, complete with numerous correspondences, and composed with the aid of James Madison, the president to succeed Jefferson. Madison signed his final approval of this work just hours before his death.

Praised for his fairly balanced depiction of his subject, attorney, historian and Professor George Tucker later voiced his pride in the publication.

These two volumes, as evidenced by the library binding and bookplates to the front pastedown of both volumes, once belonged to the Nottingham Reference Library. Both volumes feature the markings expected of ex-library works.
