The first edition.

Illustrated with a frontispiece, engraved title, one map, and six plates.

Collated, complete.

Dated 1835 to the engraved title, 1836 to the typed title page. 

A travel work following the expeditions in Africa by the Lander Brothers, Richard and John.

The Lander Brothers were the first Europeans to follow the course of the River Niger, making the discovery that it led to the Atlantic. 

Richard, the elder brother, died in 1834 after being shot by a musket ball, the wound becoming infected. John died in London in the same year this work was published, it's believed of an illness he contracted whilst exploring Africa. 

Written by the prolific author of Robert Huish, who is well known for his history books.

Condition

Rebound in a cloth binding. Externally, generally smart. Bumping to the head and tail of the spine and to the extremities. Light marks to the boards, heavier to the rear board. Front hinge is starting but firm. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright with scattered spots, heavier to the endpapers and first and last few pages. Very small damp stain to the tail of the gutter and head of the leaves of the frontispiece and engraved title.
