What Our Customers Say...

Description

First Edition, Rebound, Scarce

The first edition of this scarce work.

Illustrated with two folding facsimile letters. Collated, complete.

Sir Henry Slingsby was a Royalist who supported Charles I during the Civil War. After the defeat of the Royalists, he was arrested and charged with high treason. He was hung, drawn and quartered in 1658.

Despite his controversial political views and actions, Slingsby was also known for his contributions to science and technology. He was a member of the Royal Society and made several important advances in the fields of chemistry and metallurgy, including the development of a new method for making gunpowder.

This work, compiled by Daniel Parsons, combines Slingsby's own diary - here first published from the original manuscript - alongside a reprint of his trial, a tract he wrote shortly before his death while in the Tower of London, extracts from his family papers, and a genealogical memoir.
