Complete in ten volumes. Celebrated work of Scottish biographer James Boswell, often described as one of the greatest English biographies of all time. 

With engraved frontispiece and additional engraved title page to each volume as well as one double page full page etching, a folding map, and folding facsimile. Collation seems to vary in various copies seen in commerce. Complete with half titles.

Including 'A Journal of his Tour to the Hebrides.' With additions of anecdotes by Hawkins, Piozzi, Murphym Tyers, Reynolds, Steevens, &c. and notes by various hands. Second Croker edition featuring related material first introduced in 1831. Also featuring the original texts, augmented by the additional writings of the biographer and his subject. 

Samuel Johnson was an English author, well-known in the literary world for his many lasting contributions to various areas of humanist art, including poetry, essay-writing, biography, and more. He is described by the 'Oxford Dictionary of National Biographies' as the most distinguished man of letters in English history. 

This biography is notable for its extensive reports of Johnson's conversation, compiled through Boswell's acquaintance of Johnson since 1763. Originally published in 1791.

Condition

Rebound in uniform quarter vellum over cloth covered boards, with titles in gilt to morocco spine labels, renewed endpapers. Externally lovely with minor shelf wear only. Internally, firmly bound. Light minor spotting to first and last few leaves, affecting particularly leaves of plates. Pages otherwise generally very clean throughout.
