Sir William Gell was a classical archaeologist and illustrator. This is one of many works by Gell regarding archaeological sites in Italy, and its rich history.
With extensive former owner notations throughout, and the inscription of Thomas Marshall to a front blank of volume II.
An important contribution to the field of Classical Italian topographical archaeology, at the time this was the standard work on the excavations of Pompeii.
Condition
In full calf bindings. Lacking three spine labels, with remaining label only half present. Extensive rubbing to back strips, joints, and board perimeters. Hinges starting, with boards holding firm. Inscription to a front blank of volume II. Internally, generally firmly bound, with a preliminary gathering of volume I detached. Light spotting to pages and plates, with extensive former owner's notations throughout and to the majority of leaves and plates, in both pencil and ink.
