A collection of portraits, accommpanied by short biographies, of eminent British figures throughout history from Edmund Lodge. Illustrated with two hundred and forty engraved plates. Collated, complete. Including biographies of Katherine Parr, Cardinal Wolsey, Thomas Cranmer, Francis Drake, catherine of Braganza and many others. Sir Edmund Lodge, KH (1756-1839), herald, was a long-serving English officer of arms, a writer on heraldic subjects, and a compiler of short biographies. Lodge wrote Illustrations of British History, Biography, and Manners in the Reigns of Henry VIII, Edward VI, Mary, Elizabeth and James I (3 vols., 1791), which consisted of selections from the manuscripts of the Howard, Talbot and Cecil families preserved at the College of Arms. With bookplates of Rampbell Scarlett and The Holiday Fellowship to the front pastedowns and endpapers. Complete in twelve volumes.
Condition
In half-calf bindings with marbled boards. Externally, smart, though with some rubbing, and slight discolouration to the spine. Internally, firmly bound. Ink inscription to front free-endpapers, and pastedown of volume XII. Pages are bright, though with some foxing to the first and last few pages, and some tidemarks and foxing to the plates.
