First Edition, Original Binding, Publishers' Original Binding, Very Scarce

First editions, in a uniform cloth binding.

Eighteen volumes of the series of works from The Naval and Military Library of Entertainment. Complete in twenty volumes, lacking volume XIX and XX, 'The Night Watch; or Tales of the Sea'.

This series contains works from the pens of distinguished officers, including Captain Marryat and William Maginn, who is referred to as 'the author of The Military Sketchbook'. These texts depict military and naval adventures, often told from personal experience of the authors.

This set is comprised of the following:

Volume I-III: 'The Naval Officer' by Captain Marryat, complete in three volumes.

Volume IV-VI: 'Sailors and Saints' by the author of The Naval Sketchbook, complete in three volumes.

Volume VII-IX: 'Tales of Military Life', by the author of the Military Sketchbook, complete in three volumes.

Volume X-XII: 'The Chelsea Pensioners' by the author of the Subaltern, complete in three volumes.

Volume XII-XV: 'Tales of a Voyager to the Arctic Ocean, First Series', complete in three volumes.

Volume XVI-XVIII: 'Tales of a Voyager to the Arctic Ocean, Second Series', complete in three volumes.

Condition

In the original, uniform cloth binding. Externally, generally smart, with light bumping and rubbing to the extremities and slight fading to the spine. Slight loss to spine labels. Slight marking to the boards, moreso to volume IV. Hinges slightly strained but holding firm to most volumes, with the front hinge failed to volume XIII and between pages 2 and 3 to volume XIV. Rear hinge failing to volume XVII. Damp staining to volume VII and X. Internally, generally firmly bound, tender in places. Pages bright and clean with the odd mark.
