The first five volumes only of this six volume set. A scarce collection of English religious writer, philanthropist, poet and playwright Hannah More's works.
More was noted for her political conservatism, being described as an anti-feminist, a "counter-revolutionary", or a conservative feminist.
Consisting of: volume I, 'Stories for Persons in the Middle Ranks', and a memoir; volume II, 'Tales for the Common People', a discussion of great figures, and religious writings; volume III, 'Strictures on the Modern System of Female Education'; volume IV, 'Hints towards Forming the Character of a Young Princess', and volume V, 'Tragedies, and Poems'.
With an engraved title page to each volume, and engraved frontispieces to volumes I and II. Collated, complete.
Lacking volume VI only, which includes further poems form More', alongside essays and 'Sacred Dramas'.
With advertisements to the rear of volumes I, IV, and V.
Condition
In half calf bindings, with marbled paper covered boards. Significant rubbing to back strips, most concentrated to heads. Fading and rubbing to centre of boards. Head of front and rear joints of volume I starting, but firmly held. Front hinge of volume II strained, but firmly held. Internally, generally firmly bound. Volume II frontispiece detached. Foxing to engraved title pages and frontispieces, with pages otherwise clean and bright.
