What Our Customers Say...
Description
First Edition, Illustrated, Leather Binding
The first edition of this work. Extremely scarce. Later 1870s editions of the work occasionally surface at auction (last in 2000), but this 1832 first edition has not been seen in the last fifty years.
With the binding gilt stamped to the front board 'The Society of Writers to the Signet'. This is the crest of a private society of Scottish solicitors who date back to 1594.
In uniform full calf bindings. Rebacked, with the original boards preserved and the backstrips laid down.
This is one of the first histories of Maine, as Williamson was one of the first historians of the state. This work became the standard reference on early Maine history for the rest of the nineteenth century. It looks at Maine from its first 'discovery' in AD.1602 to the separation in A.D 1820.
A very smart copy of this scarce work.
