Publishers' Original Binding
Written in response to writings by Sir Walter Scott, this work comprises of thirteen letters providing natural explanations for supernatural phenomena.
This work was penned by David Brewster, a scientist and inventor known for his work in optics and the discovery of Brewster's angle.
From the Family Library, this being No. XXXIII.
Original price of five shillings to the front board.
Illustrated throughout with in-text engravings.
The front endpaper and pastedown demonstrate that this work was from the Reading Society held at Mr. Tibnam's, Wyle Cop, Shrewsbury, which included Robert Hunt, Miss Darwins, Lady Kynanston Powell and A. V. Corbett Esq. amongst its members. With their library card comprising the endpapers and pastedowns.
This work was handled by Charles Darwin's sister Caroline Darwin, the wife of Josiah Wedgewood III; the dates which she took the book from the Reading Society Library are filled in to the front pastedown.
Condition
In the publisher's original full cloth binding. Externally, a trifle worn; spine has been repaired with tape, extremities are a little bumped and board has the odd mark. Internally, binding is tender, held by cords only in places and exposed particularly at pages 256 and 257. Pages have the occasional spot.
