What Our Customers Say...

Description

Early Edition, Publishers' Original Binding, Very Scarce

First published in 1831, this is the second edition of Jonhnes's work, very scarce in all editions. Johnes won the Cymmrodorion Society prize for the work.

In the essay, Johnes sets out to explore the reasons why Nonconformity was so prevalent in Wales. He argues that several factors contributed to the growth of Nonconformity, including the Welsh language, which he believed was a barrier to communication between Welsh speaking people and the English speaking clergy of the Church of England.

Johnes also points to the lack of Welsh representation in the higher ranks of the Church of England and the absence of a Welsh bishop, which he believed led to a feeling of alienation among Welsh people.

With the inscription 'Rev. I Rhys Jones from S. R.' to the front free endpaper.

A scarce but important historical record of the role of the Church of England in Welsh history.
