A really beautiful copy of this work, which is semi-biographical, and tells the stories of several Spanish explorers who sailed across the Atlantic Ocean to Mexico, the Caribbean, North, and South America. Included are the stories of Alonso de Ojeda, Pedro A. Nino, Christopher Guerra, Vasco Nunez de Balboa, and more. Containing six plates, one of which is a folding map of Mexico, the Caribbean, and South America. Washington Irving was an American short-story writer, essayist, biographer, historian, and diplomat of the early 19th century. He is best known for his short stories "Rip Van Winkle" and "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow", both of which appear in his collection The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon, Gent.

Condition

Handsomely bound in full calf with gilt design and lettering on the spine. Externally, lovely with very minor rubbing and shelf wear. Internally, firmly bound. Internally, very small tidemark to the recto of the frontispiece page. Very small tidemark to page 336 and 337, along the folding map. Small tear on page 337, though not affecting the text. Otherwise, pages bright and clean.
