The scarce first edition. In a half calf binding on marbled boards. Lacking the pages A-A4, at the front of the book, including the map frontispiece and title page. With seven full-page plates. A fascinating travelogue of Robert William Hale Hardy, of his voyage to Mexico, travelling through areas which had not yet been visited by any other European at the time. Hardy was commissioned by the "General Pearl and Coral Fishery Association of London" to search for pearls in the Gulf of California, from 1825 until 1828. This work gives a thorough description of his journey, with chapters titled, 'Reptiles', 'Curious Fruit', 'Revolution of Indians', 'Defeat of Colonel Guerrero' and many more. With an advertisement to the reader at the start of the volume, and four pages of publisher's advertisements to the rear. The front free endpaper and blank are detached but inserted into the volume. Lacking the rear free endpaper. With the previous owner's ink signature to the first page of the preface.
Condition
In a half calf binding. Externally, sound with shelf wear to the extremities. Loss to the upper and lower spine. Fading to the spine. Marks to the boards. Remains of a numbered label to the front board. The front free endpaper is detached. Lacking the rear free endpaper. Hinges strained but firm. Spotting to the paste-downs. Internally, binding slightly strained but generally firm. Pages are age-toned, but the text remains bright. The front blank is detached. Lacking the title page and map frontispiece. Handling marks throughout. The odd small closed tear to the edges, but not affecting the text. Large part of page 115 is missing. The previous owner's ink signature to the first page of the preface.
