Heber details his journey from Calcutta to Bombay between 1824 and 1825, shortly after being consecrated as Bishop of Calcutta. Also present are his remarks upon Ceylon, and an account of a shorter journey to Madras and the Southern provinces of India in 1826, alongside letters written in this period. Heber died in April 1826, and it is speculated that this was due the toll this journey in a foreign climate took on his body.

During this journey Heber was accompanied by his personal chaplain Martin Stowe, and the Archdeacon of Calcutta, Daniel Corrie. The tour was nearly aborted early on as Stowe, one of his travelling partners, tragically died. However, the tour continued and Heber toured from Calcutta to Bombay over a period of 16 months.

Bookplate of Thomas Pitt Cholmondeley-Tapper to the recto of the front endpapers. Cholmondeley-Tapper was an auto racing driver, the first internationally known auto driver from New Zealand.
