Description

First Edition, Illustrated, Publishers' Original Binding

Collated; illustrated with a frontispiece to each volume, a folding map to the rear of volume I, four further plates to volume I, and four further plates to volume II. Lacking one plate to volume I; 'Pagoda'.

A first person account from Reginald Heber, English bishop, man of letters, and hymn writer.

Heber details his journey from Calcutta to Bombay between 1824 and 1825, shortly after being consecrated as Bishop of Calcutta. Also present are his remarks upon Ceylon, and an account of a shorter journey to Madras and the Southern provinces of India in 1826, alongside letters written in this period. Heber died in April 1826, and it is speculated that this was due the toll this journey in a foreign climate took on his body.

The first edition of this fascinating insight into India in the early nineteenth century.

Condition

In the publisher's original cloth bindings, with paper labels to spine. Discolouration and tide marks to back strips, with bumping to spine head and tail, resulting in small losses to the cloth. Volume I bright, with light spotting throughout. Tide marks to first five leaves of volume II, including to frontispiece and title page, and with further tide marks to plated.
