First UK editions. Containing: 'A Chronicle of the Conquest of Granada From the Mss. of Fray Antonio Agapida' (1829, in two volumes) 'A History of the Life and Voyages of Christopher Columbus' (1828, in four volumes) 'A History of the Life and Voyages of Christopher Columbus' is a biographical account of Christopher Columbus, one of the first examples of American historical fiction and one of several attempts at national myth-making undertaken by American writers and poets of the 19th century, written by Washington Irving in 1828 and published in four volumes in Britain and in three volumes in the United States. The work was the most popular biographical account of Columbus in the English-speaking world until the publication of Samuel Eliot Morison's biography 'Admiral of the Ocean Sea' in 1942. 'Chronicle of the Conquest of Granada' was published a year later, followed by 'Voyages' and 'Discoveries of the Companions of Columbus' in 1831. Illustrated with 2 folding maps to 'Columbus'. Bookplate of Clonbrock to front pastedown of volume I. Complete in six volumes.

In half-calf bindings. Externally, very smart, with just some minor rubbing, and slight wear and bumping to the corners. Internally, firmly bound, though a few pages of the second volume of 'Columbus' are beginning to work loose. Pages are bright, and generally clean, though with some foxing to the first and last few pages.
