What Our Customers Say...

Description

Illustrated, Leather Binding, Rebound

1827 'New Edition' with ten more illustrated plates than previous editions.

Bound in a contemporary full tree-calf binding with later paper spine adhered to boards.

Illustrated with one partially hand-coloured frontispiece and eighty other woodcut engravings.

This is an interesting historical work which expands upon the different professions and trades found within England in the early nineteenth century. This book details different career paths ranging from the Apothecary to the Wool-Comber, giving details of daily responsibilities as well as a history of the trades.

The work ends with a 'Description of Machines', with objects such as 'Iron Foundry', 'A Water-Mill', 'Gas-light Apparatus', and 'The Safety Lamp'.

Blindstamp title to front board states that this particular copy belonged to the Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge in some shape or form. This work was printed for C. & J. Rivinton, who were the booksellers for the society, so this could likely be the original boards for this edition.

Ink stamp to front endpaper from a prior owner, 'H. Cartmell'.

Collated, missing five of the illustrated plates, particularly 'The Attorney' (p. 5), 'The Distiller' (p. 119), 'The Gun-Maker' (p. 152), 'The Looking-Glass Maker' (p. 195), and 'The Needle-Maker' (p. 225).
