The very scarce first edition.
The author's presentation copy, inscribed to the recto of the front free endpaper, 'The Reverend Thomas Newton, with the author's sincere regard and esteem, Claverton Farm, July 31 1827'.
An interesting treatise by Moyle Sherer, in which he tries to spread his evangelical religious beliefs across his comrades in the army. Sherer acquired his new religious views whilst fighting in India.
Joseph Moyle Sherer was a British army officer who fought in the Peninsular War, seeing action at many important battles. Whilst serving in the army he also wrote travel works on the places he was stationed.

Condition
Rebound in a quarter cloth binding with marbled paper to the boards. Externally, smart. Spine is very lightly faded. Label to the verso of the front endpaper. Author's inscription to the recto of the front free endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are lightly age toned and clean with the occasional spot.
