1827-1828 Monkeyana, or Men in Miniature
What Our Customers Say...
Description
First Edition, Illustrated, Leather Binding
The first edition of this work, illustrated with an engraved title page, and twenty-four engraved mounted plates on India paper, each retaining the original tissue guard. Collated, complete.
With the engraved title page dated 1827, with eight engraved plates dated 1827, and sixteen engraved plates dated 1828.
A satirical masterpiece, 'Monkeyana' features humorous etchings of anthropomorphised monkeys in human dress, effectively satirising early nineteenth century society.
Thomas Landseer was enormously popular in the Victorian era, assisting his brother, Sir Edwin Landseer, in giving art lessons to both Queen Victoria, and Prince Albert.
Fourteen plates are signed with Landseer's name, four are initialled, and six are unsigned.
A truly charming work.
Condition
Rebacked, in a contemporary half morocco binding, with back strip renewed and retaining the original boards. Bumping and minor losses of paper to the board perimeters. Hinges neatly reinforced. Internally, firmly bound. Plates and tissue guards clean and bright, but with instances of significant spotting to paper surrounding plates, most concentrated surrounding the engraved title page.
