What Our Customers Say...

Description

First Edition, Illustrated, Leather Binding, Very Scarce, With Letter

An association copy of this work, with two letters tipped in.

The first letter, dated 1830, presents this work 'To John Ramage Campbell - in acknowledgement of great voluntary industry - James Boyd'.

The second letter, dated 1874, reads 'To, Bertie Rumford, as an incitement to diligence from his father's obliged friend, M. Campbell'. The letter instructs Rumford to read page 35 of the work, and refers to a 'Count Rumford' funding the kitchen in the north-west tower of the hospital.

An inscription to this page notes 'the Count Rumford mentioned in these pages was a benefactor to humanity through various researches, especially in the Oeconomy of Heart. He was an ancestor of Bertie Rumford'.

With the publisher's original front wrap bound in.

Illustrated with a portrait frontispiece, engraved title page, and seven further plates. Collated, complete.

Extra-illustrated with one further engraved plate of the hospital tipped in to the start of the work.

A wonderful study of George Heriot and his hospital. Heriot was court goldsmith to Anne of Denmark, the wife of King James VI of Scotland, as well as to the king himself, and after his death left the bulk of his estate to found a hospital to care for orphaned children in Edinburgh.
